District 5 - Commissioner
Capt. Kelly Windes, age 66, is a lifelong Destin area resident and a third generation Destin fisherman. He graduated from Choctawhatchee High School in 1964 and attended Okaloosa-Walton Junior College. He served his country as a Quartermaster in the United States Navy aboard the USS PERRY DD844. He has been a full-time charter boat captain for 40 years. Windes owns and operates the Charter Boat SUNRISE docked at the Destin Fishing Fleet Marina in the Destin Harbor, and was awarded Destin 1994 Businessman of the Year by the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce, for a collaborate effort by Destin fishermen to preserve their livelihood in the vital fishing industry through development of the Destin Fishing Fleet Marina. He also has ownership interests in several other businesses.
In addition to his business ventures, Commissioner Windes is also active in his community. He currently serves on the Norriego Point Committee; is a longtime member and supporter of the Destin Chamber of Commerce; past-president and longtime member of the Destin Charter Boat Association; past Director and longtime member of the Destin Fishing Rodeo in which he is also an active competitor each year. Windes was instrumental in the formation of the Destin Fisherman’s Co-op, where he served as the Vice-President for many years. He served a successful 4-year term on the Destin City Council and remains active in all of these organizations.
He has been married for 27 years to Mary Anne Windes, the owner and broker of Real Estate Professionals of Destin, Inc. They have two adult children, Trey and Missy Windes who have chosen Okaloosa County as their permanent residence.
As a successful businessman, he is well-qualified with many of the county duties including but not limited to budgets, long-term planning, and development. Commissioner Windes would like to thank the many friends and fishing customers from Destin, Mary Esther, Fort Walton Beach, Shalimar, Niceville, Crestview, Baker, Blackman, Laurel Hill and the surrounding communities who encouraged and supported him, and looks forward to serving as the District 5 county commissioner.
